The Whitneys Are MovingAfter ten years at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City where he taught Spiritual Formation, Don will be moving to the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Don is scheduled to begin his ministry at the oldest of the six SBC seminaries on June 1. More than four thousand students attend this school where Dr. Albert Mohler is president. Don's new responsibilities will be as (1) Associate Professor of Biblical Spirituality, (2) Director of the Supervised Ministry Experience, (3) supervisor for a Ph.D. program in spirituality and after that, (4) leader for a new D.Min program in spirituality. As Associate Professor of Biblical Spirituality, Don will teach a class of "Biblical Spirituality" required of all master's level students at Southern. This will be virtually the same as Don's "Personal Spiritual Disciplines" class required at Midwestern and based upon his Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. For those familiar with the curriculum at Southern, Don's new class there will replace the "Formations" course currently required of all master's students. As Director of the Supervised Ministry Experience, Don will coordinate the effort to match each student in the School of Theology with a mentor who will supervise a specific ministry experience of that student in a local church for one semester. His role as leader of a Ph.D. program in spirituality is especially exciting. At present, no evangelical seminary in the US is known to offer a terminal degree in "spirituality." The opportunity to establish the first such program to train the next generation of those who teach in one's discipline is both a thrilling and sobering opportunity. Don hopes to complete his Th.D. with specialization in Christian Spirituality from the University of South Africa in 2006. This is necessary for him to have the academic credentials required to teach on the terminal degree level, as well as to be promoted from the middle rank of associate professor to the position of full professor. Once the Ph.D. program is established, Don is expected to supervise a D.Min degree program for those who choose to prefer practical, non-residential degree in spirituality as opposed to a research degree. Don can be reached through via this website at Don@BiblicalSpirituality.org. Don's office address is now: SBTS Box 8-1944, 2825 Lexington Road, Louisville, KY 40280-1944. Please pray for the Whitneys during this season of change. | |||
