How Can I Be Sure I'm A Christian?

"If you have questions about your assurance or even somebody else's, you should read this book. Dr. Whitney's illustrations are superb, and his borrowings from the great theologians of the past are wise, stimulating, and well-chosen. I commend his work highly."
—Dr. James M. Boice

"An excellent book on a vital subject."
—John Blanchard, International Evangelist and author of Right with God and Ultimate Questions.

"How Can I Be Sure I'm a Christian? is must reading for new and old Christians alike, since we've all struggled with doubt."
—Brent D. Garrison, Vice President, Moody Bible Institute

Early in March my dad handed me a book of yours called How Can I Be Sure I Am a Christian? I grew up in a Christian home and I always thought I was saved because I simply prayed a prayer as a child. I got a little older and started getting deeper and deeper into sin, but I still had a false assurance that i could live however I wanted and I would still be alright when it came to judgment. At the time I read your book I was smoking a pack a day, doing drugs, drinking, swearing every second word, fornicating—basically just living a totally spirtually and otherwise rotten life. Through the words of your book the Holy Spirit convicted me and brought me to repentance. I was living the way I described and then I gave my life to God one night and woke up the next morning and started living a totally different life. It was like a night and day change. I thank the Lord . . . . I have been in my Bible and prayer for hours each day since I have been saved and I am planning to go to Bible college next September.

If you want to be certain, read this book! I invited Christ into my life and wondered what was next. I read everything I could. I had a hunger for the Lord. Then I started having some uncertainties of my salvation. I read this book and discovered the affirmation I needed. This is a Must Read for every Christian, young and old. New to the Lord or not. God the Father wants us all to know him. Read this book and be lifted up!

Deacon Jerry held on to that book the last three weeks of his life and truly felt it was God answering his prayers. When he died this past Sunday your book was laying by his side. His wife shared with me that he received more comfort from it than anything else and read from it constantly in his last hours.

Your book "How Can I Be Sure I'm a Christian" has helped me through a difficult time. . . . I began to have serious questions about my salvation. . . . It didn't take long for the book to draw me completely in. It seemed as though you had written it just for me, and so often I found myself saying, "Yes! Yes!! That's exactly how I'm feeling!". It felt so good to discover that I'm not the only Christian to ever allow unworthiness to convince themselves that they were not saved. Through your book I have now regained the joy of my spiritual walk, as well as once again finding joy and enthusiasm for life in general.

"The Sunday School class I teach recently used your book, How Can I Be Sure I'm a Christian? The response was overwhelming. Most of the class are middle-aged adults who've grown up in church, yet who are very immature spiritually. But as we read the book, I could see a real thirst for truth growing in many of them, and since that time several members have borrowed my copy of Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. The best part is that they have not only read it, but they are growing in their practice of the disciplines."

"I read How Can I Be Sure I'm a Christian? . . . It woke me up!"

I have just read your book How Can I Be Sure I'm a Christian, and I write to thank and encourage you. Assurance is something I have been much exercised with in the past, and I have just finished reading five books on the subject, all by sound and capable evangelical writers. Each was valuable and each brought different insights to the topic, but I have to say that yours was by far the most useful, practical and convincing. I won't single out individual chapters as I found them all deeply effective and helpful, and full of information which was immensely practical and previously unknown to me.

I wanted to tell you that just after I got to MacArthur Blvd. I opened up a little book store. I just filled it with good God-centered resources. One of the things that surprised me the most was what books people bought. The best selling book so far has been "How can I be sure I'm a Christian". I never realized how many people were concerned about that issue. That is such a great little book.
